December 1980 – Football injury, partial tear of right Medial Collateral Ligament (MCL) and tear of right medial meniscus
March 1980 – Surgery to remove part of meniscus and clean up MCL
September 1984 – Basketball injury  –  torn right anterior cruciate ligament (ACL)
September 1984 – Surgery to remove more of meniscus and bone chips in right knee and drill holes to improve blood flow.
December 1984 – Fitted with brace to function as ACL – ACL never repaired.
March 1988 – Injured left knee while playing baseball
1998-1999– Received Synvisc injections to stimulate cartilage growth – moderate improvement.
1989 – 2012 – Stretching, ice and ibuproffen as I continued softball, baseball and occasional tennis.
2012 – Began cycling regularly and tracking on MapMyRide
2012-2015 – Occasional cortisone shots, fitted for orthotics
August 2018 – X-rays for potential knee replacement,
December 2018 – Cortisone shots in both knees in preparation for trip to Asia
December 2018-January 2019 Trip to Asia – If knees were a problem was planning on scheduling replacement some time after return
May 8, 2019 – MRIs on both knees show ACL deficiency (tear) macerated (shredded, frayed, or ripped up) meniscus, genu varus deformation (bow-leggedness) advanced osteoarthritis, loose bodies and full thickness  loss of articular cartilage. In layman’s terms, my knees were toast.
June 13, 2019 – Surgery – Successful simultaneous bilateral total knee arthroplasty  (double knee replacement) performed by Dr. John Malloy at Broward Health North.
June 14, 2019 – First steps on new knees
June 15, 2019 – Moved from hospital to inpatient rehab, walked 100 feet with walker
June 16, 2019 – Took final dose of percoset for pain. Stopped use of opioid drugs less than 72 hours after surgery. Treatment consisted of ice, Ibuprofen and Gabapentin  (non-narcotic nerve pain reliever)
June 22, 2019 – Released from inpatient rehab returning home – able to fully function independently with aid of a walker.
